Member Spotlight: Bowen Blair

author Bowen Blair and an image of his book A Force for Nature

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing concentrates the mind. It also is a wonderful way to get your stories out into the world and, hopefully, change minds and inspire people.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Just write. Get something on paper, then return later and cut, mend, change or throw out. But get something down.

What is your favorite time to write? Morning, when my brain is fresh and creative.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Cut, cut, and cut again. Be concise, rely on verbs, and use few adverbs…

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? The ability to broadcast my message across multiple media.

Bowen Blair’s A Force for Nature: Nancy Russell’s Fight to Save the Columbia Gorge is out now with Oregon State University Press.
