Writing allows me to go to a place inside myself where I can shut out the world’s cares and stresses and tap into that creative part of me that is just waiting for a chance to express itself. Not only do I find writing cathartic, it energies and inspires me. There’s nothing quite like creating an entire world from your imagination. Sometimes I read a book I wrote years ago, and I am amazed that that story came from inside me. That is also why I believe it is an important medium for the world as well. We live in a time where imagination has been replaced by convenience and passive entertainment, and it is to society’s detriment. What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I’ve never had writer’s block, so I don’t have a tried and tested remedy. I have had times where I was more distracted and less productive when I write, and to overcome that, I set myself realistic daily writing goals and milestones. I also forbid myself from scrolling through social media. LOL. What is your favorite time to write? Early morning! I’ve always been a morning person and that is when I’m most creative and productive. That being said, despite my best efforts, I don’t always have a chance to dive into my current WIP until afternoon. My muse refuses to cooperate if bedtime approaches, and she feigns an apoplexy if I try to write late at night. What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Write what you like to read and stay true to your own voice. Personally, I think too many authors chase current fads or trends. While they may find success that way, I believe establishing a loyal reader base and consistently providing readers with quality stories that meet their expectations is paramount. However, I don’t believe an author must stick to a single genre in order to be successful. Knowing when to branch out and being honest with yourself why you want to explore other genres is a must. Trying something different can be a palate cleanser or you might stumble upon a genre you really love. Just be careful not to hop around too much. You’re readers won’t keep up. What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Modern conveniences have made it possible to be highly productive and still provide authentic, historically accurate novels. I also love connecting with my readers via various mediums. Once upon a time, authors were creatures who wrote books and if a reader was lucky, they might encounter an author at a book signing or other event. Now, readers can connect through live videos, pod casts, newsletters, and social media. I’ve become great friends with many of my readers that way.
