Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing allows me to take ideas that start in my heart and put them out into the world where they can connect with others. It’s like a bridge between imagination and reality, helping us all feel a little more understood. The world needs more stories that bring us together and celebrate our differences.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Honestly, I don’t experience writer’s block too often. I’m usually chasing around 3 little ones, so when I do get a quiet moment, I’m ready to put my ideas to paper! It’s more about finding the time than finding the words.

What is your favorite time to write? I love to write when inspiration strikes—usually after a moment that really moves me. The last time this happened was watching my 3-year-old daughter during therapy. She was so brave and determined, and that kind of raw, in-the-moment inspiration is when I do my best writing.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? The best piece of advice? Don’t get hung up on everyone else’s advice! Most people mean well, but writing is personal, and what works for others might not work for you. Absolutely, listen and you might find some gold nuggets, but if something doesn’t fit your mold, it’s okay to move on.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? I’m most excited to bring light, love, kindness, and encouragement to the next generation of kids. I want every kid that picks up my books to feel empowered, inspired, and know that they can do anything!

Kendra James’s Charlie Horse, illustrated by Karina Syevalnyeva, is out now.
