Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Words create worlds. I have lived in those worlds since the age of three when I learned to read. It is as natural to me as breathing. Our world needs words–words of triumph, words of courage, words of joy and words of tears. The more we can create with words the more we can come to understand one another more deeply. As Salmon Rushdie said, “humans are the only animals to tell stories”.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Take a walk.

What is your favorite time to write? Early mornings when the house is quiet and I have my first cup of Joe.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Keep writing. Censor less.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? How technology is shrinking our world in positive ways.

Jacalyn S. Burke’s The Custodians is out now with Thousand Acres.
