Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing is an outlet for me to celebrate language, use my mind in a literary rather than verbal way, and expression emotion and thought. As for why writing is important for the world, let’s consider what it has made possible since the rise of cuneiform in the Ancient Near East….

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Grab a piece of paper and write down something – anything. That inevitably leads to more ideas, some worth keeping.

What is your favorite time to write? Afternoons.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Be your own editor.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? I’m excited at the easy access to literature through modern technology.

Matthew Kennedy’s On Elizabeth Taylor: An Opinionated Guide is out May 21 with Oxford University Press.
