How Authors Can Protect Themselves from Harassment and Bullying Online

Harassment and bullying are on the rise in online communities. These behaviors hurt authors by making it harder for them to promote their work, and by degrading the quality of online dialogue. Even worse, this abuse often targets authors from marginalized backgrounds, which can result in the stifling of diverse voices and free expression.

The Authors Guild is committed to providing a safe online space for our members, and protecting them from online harassment and abuse. Our Member Code of Conduct expressly bars such behavior and is strictly enforced.

In addition, we encourage authors to take advantage of PEN America’s resources in this area. These include tactics for authors to defend themselves and others from online harassment, and trainings against doxing and other forms of abuse.
