Member Spotlight: Betty Bolté

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world?
We learn and grow through storytelling. Only through writing down the stories can we share our experiences and thoughts with others. Stories and books provide such a wide range of benefits: from education to inspiration to entertainment. As Thomas Jefferson said, “I cannot live without books.”

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block?
When I hit a “block” it’s likely because the story has veered in a different direction than anticipated. I like to take a walk or otherwise get up from my desk and mull over the impasse. Then when I go back to writing, the snare unravels.

What is your favorite time to write?
I write from 8-12 M-F. I’ve trained myself to be creative during those hours, then I spend the rest of the day on non-creative tasks and activities.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers?
First, you must write something down before you can make it better through revising. You can’t edit a blank page! Second, every writer has to find the writing process that works. Nobody has the secret ingredient for how to craft/piece together a great book.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age?
We’re living in some pretty challenging times. Being able to share my stories with others to provide a bit of distraction and respite gives me a sense of helping others. At least, I hope my stories are enjoyed by many!
