Member Spotlight: Bonnie Stanard

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? I can say in writing what I don’t, perhaps can’t, say by speech. Writing is the faculty that makes us human. Without it, we would communicate no better than an ape or poodle.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Reading, usually nonfiction—that is to say, background information that I might use in writing a story.

What is your favorite time to write? Afternoon and night.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? A quote by Somerset Maugham: “There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Not sure about “in today’s age.” But I sure get excited when the first copy of my book arrives from my publisher. As a writer “in today’s age” I’m excited that we can now return to in-person writing workshops.

Bonnie Stanard’s Curious Design is out this month with Brandylane Publishers.
