Member Spotlight: D.M. Mahoney

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing has always been a big part of my life. I don’t know where that came from. I remember being eight and trying to type a story on a typewriter. The story started with walking up a porch step, that’s as far as I got. I have no idea why I would have a desire to write a story at that age, but I still have that feeling. Writing is a way of communicating with future generations after you are long gone. It’s also a form of expression where one has the time to carefully consider the words to use and then there is the delete key, of course.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I find when I am stuck in some situation where I can’t find a distraction and I have time to kill, I will write.

What is your favorite time to write? Late afternoon. I like mornings to read what I wrote.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? You need to be thick-skinned when it comes to feedback. It’s easier said than done. I struggle.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Self-publishing opportunities. There are lots of online resources available to help a self-published author.
