Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Storytelling is about exploring the nuances of life, the anguish within beauty and wisdom within pain. When we hold our stories inside, they weigh us down. When we release them, we find not only our voice but perspective and a different way of engaging with the world.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Boredom works well, as do long walks, going offline for extended periods of time, and practicing presence (truly listening to the world).

What is your favorite time to write? 5 a.m.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? That our strengths and weaknesses as people are reflected as strengths and weaknesses in our writing. It totally changed my perspective on revision and expanded my capability and self-awareness as a writer.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Everything about being alive feels exciting right now. Seeing how the writing community comes together in an age of distraction is riveting.

Jen Knox’s We Arrive Uninvited is out March 15 with Steel Toe Books.
