Member Spotlight: Kathie Giorgio

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? My entire world is writing–I write, teach, edit, coach, advocate. I believe that writers are the true historians in our worlds. There is no better way to know what was going on with the human condition at any point in time than to read a book.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I’ve never had writer’s block – I don’t believe in it. I believe what we consider “writer’s block” is actually writer’s self-criticism–the writer starts something, says, “Well, that’s stupid,” stops and start something else, and on and on. Then the writer ends his or her day by saying, “I must have writer’s block. I didn’t get anything done.” But a lot was accomplished! All those ideas abandoned to the delete key! We need to fight through our own self-doubts and put down what our imagination tells us is a good idea.

What is your favorite time to write? I’m an afternoon writer. I meet with clients in the morning, write in the afternoon from 1 – 4 or 5, then meet with clients and teach classes in the evening. And stay up all night, reading student manuscripts!

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Write now. Edit later.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? It’s always about the reader’s response. The technological age allows readers to find us more easily. I love reading emails from readers, even the negative ones (which often make me laugh). But it’s the reach. We write to reach. And we are aware more than ever of how far our reach extends.
