Writing fiction helps me makes sense … of everything. Family, friendships, death, life. For the world, I think it’s one of the few things that can connect us. Reading about others not like me makes my world bigger–and reminds me how alike we often are. Reading about different ways of life and different perspectives makes me more compassionate. If everyone in this world read, I am certain it would be a more peaceful place. What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Sitting down and staying seated! If I do this for 2 hours–and shut off all distractions–I will inevitably write. It might not always be great, but it moves me forward. And often I have to wade through the not-great to get to the magic moment where the words sing on the page. Patience + commitment. What is your favorite time to write? 5am to 8am. The city is still sleeping. The world feels as if it’s mine and mine alone. Plus, it’s too early for anxiety which in my house likes to sleep in! What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Follow your heart. What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? There are so many more writers from so many more walks of life being published–and so many more ways for readers to share and communicate with one another. It’s thrilling to be a small part of a big, ongoing conversation between writers and readers that spans the globe. Kim Fay’s Love & Saffron: A Novel of Friendship, Food, and Love is out now with G.P.
