Member Spotlight: Kim Wozencraft

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world?

Writing keeps me somewhat sane in an insane world. It’s an important medium because it reaches people on a very individual level; the writer/reader connection is personal and confidential, which offers opportunities for change and growth in both directions. I’m teaching a course right now called Contemporary Issues and Literature, and when we discuss works of fiction that explore the issues on a very personal level, through storytelling, we’re not just talking concepts anymore. The distance is broken down and the issues become very real and accessible. It’s no longer about us and them; it’s about we.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block?

Do more research. And take long walks in the woods. And do more research. And ride my bike. And do more research.

What is your favorite time to write?

I’m an early riser. Mornings are my favorite. But I’ll write whenever I get the chance.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers?

From Mary Heaton Vorce’s mouth to Sinclair Lewis’s ears: “Apply the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair.”

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age?

I am anxiously awaiting the first fully AI-created novel. There’s always room for unintentional comedy in the world.
