Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? It is how I interact with the outside world–a connection from within to without. The words we choose matter more than ever as the internet makes it all too easy to spread thoughts.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Deadlines!

What is your favorite time to write? The quiet of the early morning.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Pay attention to details–for the sake of accuracy, authenticity, readability.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? It’s a way of holding on to the past and relating to the future at the same time. What made Hemingway’s writing fresh still holds true, but what we express in a style like his can adapt to changing times.

Nicholas Reynolds’s Need to Know: World War II and the Rise of American Intelligence is out now with Mariner Books.
