Writing is a vital part of maintaining my cognitive and creative abilities as I get older. I find great joy in seeing an initially vague idea be developed into the larger context of a written work. Writing is an important medium for the world to expose us all to situations, ideas and interests foreign to us. The written word educates and entertains us and is a vital distraction to the myriad challenges in our lives. What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Read, read and read even more! Books, newspapers, magazines, anything. Getting away from one’s own work and discovering what others are writing often clears my mind and provides a “re-set” to continue my writing. What is your favorite time to write? Usually mid-morning to mid-afternoon. What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? 1) Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. 2) Be careful what you wish for in your writing career. Try very hard to know why you are writing and who you are really writing for. This is critical when you encounter the many challenges that are part of writing and trying to get published. What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? There are so many opportunities to improve your writing now. Richard Donald Groves’s The Hidden Game is out now with Koehler Books.
