Member Spotlight: Ubbi Disco

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Sharing personal perspectives is what helps others understand the world, not just in the present, but throughout different ages. Really, the only way to appreciate the present is to read voraciously as many topics/genres as one can. What did people in the past think about the future? What do people in the present think about the past–what customs have changed, and what remains in place? What do people in the present think about themselves or where the world is heading? Writing at length–expanding on ideas–is necessary for social evolution.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Get angry. Never suppress anger–redirect it!

What is your favorite time to write? I prefer to write in the dead of night, when it’s absolutely silent, but some of my best ideas come when I’m at work or away from my writing desk, which is why I’m always taking notes.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Nelson Algren said to always keep writing, and I feel it’s true because even when it’s junk, if you keep at it, eventually, you’ll have something to edit. Editing, however, is something else…

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Writers today have almost instant access to just about everything ever written. Researching what works and why is no longer limited to the books one can acquire from a local library or bookstore. Inspiration is usually just a click away.
