On November 17, the National Book Award Foundation announced the winners of the 2021 National Book Award in five categories. They are Jason Mott, Hell of a Book (Fiction); Tiya Miles, All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake (Nonfiction); Martín Espada, Floaters (Poetry); Elisa Shua Dusapin, Winter in Sokcho as translated by Aneesa Abbas Higgins (Translated Literature); and Malinda Lo, Last Night at the Telegraph Club (Young People’s Literature). We congratulate them on this tremendous achievement.
We also applaud all the finalists, including three Authors Guild members, Lauren Groff (Matrix), Robert Jones, Jr. (The Prophets) both nominated in the fiction category, and Sora Kim-Russell who, along with Joungmin Lee Comfort, translated from the Korean Bo-Young Kim’s On the Origins of Species and Other Stories in the translated literature category. This is the third time Groff has been a National Book Awards finalist in fiction.
Among the most prestigious honors bestowed upon American authors, National Book Award winners in each category receive $10,000, a statue, and a bronze medal. Finalists receive $1,000 and a bronze medal.
We honor these gifted authors and thank them for their contributions to the rich, diverse, highly robust body of American literature.
