This is a precarious time for all writers. While writers for hard-copy publications are being dismissed and downsized all over, many of them at least have the protection of a union to help look after their interests. Those working in digital media, however, typically do not. That is why, on August 8, the Guild wrote letters in support of the writers of Slate and Thrillist in their efforts to unionize. Few individual writers have any true bargaining power, but collective bargaining gives writers greater leverage to negotiate the terms of their employment. The Authors Guild supports collective bargaining for all staff writers and hopes to one day attain similar benefits for freelance journalists and authors. Both letters can be viewed below.
