NEW YORK, NY, November 27, 2017—The Authors Guild is pleased to announce that Cheryl L. Davis has joined the Guild as its General Counsel. Davis is a former partner at the firm of Menaker & Herrmann LLP, with 25 years’ legal experience. Her practice focused on counseling clients on intellectual property issues and litigating copyright and trademark cases. An award-winning playwright, she has long combined her creative passion with her legal work, representing theater clients in connection with a variety of contract and corporate issues (including both intellectual property and employment matters). She has made numerous presentations and written on intellectual property for the commercial arena, as well as for theater artists and other creatives.
“We are so fortunate to have Cheryl join us,” said Mary Rasenberger, the Authors Guild’s Executive Director. “She is an exceptional, versatile, and extremely experienced attorney, who has much to offer the Guild. As a writer herself, she will be a particularly effective advocate for authors.”
Davis is a 1983 graduate of Princeton University and a 1986/1987 graduate of Columbia University (having received a joint degree in law and journalism from the latter). She started her legal career at Weil Gotshal & Manges, in the trade regulation department. She was recently honored by the Lawyers Alliance for New York for her pro bono work, and she is the Vice President of Theater Resources Unlimited, a networking organization for producers and producing entities, as well as a proud member of and outside counsel for the League of Professional Theatre Women.
“This job is really a dream come true for me,” Davis said. “Not only does it open new horizons for me in the practice of intellectual property law, it gives me the opportunity to help my fellow authors and advocate for their rights.”
On behalf of its over 9,000 members, the Authors Guild welcomes Cheryl L. Davis as its new General Counsel.
