The Authors Guild stands in solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of protestors expressing outrage at the police violence against African Americans. The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and countless others at the hands of police are a painful and urgent reminder of how much work remains to be done to stamp out systematic racism in our society. And that even after fifty-six years from the passage of the Civil Rights Act, police departments across the country are able to harass, intimidate, and murder African American citizens with complete impunity.
We are equally outraged by the use of force and violence being currently used against protesters and the targeting of journalists and the attempts to prevent them doing their job of informing the public. First Amendment rights are even more vital in times of social and political turmoil.
We must all take responsibility to help dismantle systems that have brought harm to our fellow citizen.
