Writing has become almost a reflex for me. I cannot imagine not writing. And the modern world needs writers more than ever to help non-writers make sense of the current chaos. What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Go for a walk in nature. What is your favorite time to write? Early morning. What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Not to give up. “Keep at it. I do think you can do this,” Gail Hochman wrote me after reading 100 pages of my memoir. I appreciated the encouragement and never forgot her advice and belief in my manuscript. The time wasn’t right when I queried her. Now that 11,000 boomers turn 65 every day, the issues I raise are more pertinent, making the memoir more commercial. I persevered, and now my revised book, originally written in 2007, has been published, almost 20 years later. What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? The generosity of fellow writers. I love getting to know them, especially the women. We have so much in common. Alexandra Grabbe’s Seeing Joy: A Story of Life, Death, and What Comes Next is out tomorrow with Koehler Books.
