To help, we’ve compiled a list of writing opportunities that are currently open for submission, including contests and small presses, as well as free, funded, and low-cost writing residencies. Writing Contests July 15: The 2023 Adrift Chapbook Contest July 16: Screw Turn Flash Fiction Competition July 22: Boise City Writer-in-Residence Six-Month Residency August 1: Granum Foundation Prize for the Completion of a Literary Manuscript or Translation August 9: TulipTree Publishing Story (any genre) Contest September 5: Terrain Annual Writing Contest in poetry, nonfiction, and fiction September 8: Aesthetica Creative Writing Award October 15: Copper Nickel book publishing prize for a poetry collection Independent Publishers That Have Open Submission Periods Now Feminist Press: Open to literary fiction, activist nonfiction, hybrid memoirs, and athologies until July 31, 2023. Sarabande Books: Accepting submissions for literary nonfiction, manuscripts from Kentucky-affiliated writers, and proposals for works in translation through July 31, 2023. Tupelo Press: Open for poetry manuscript (48-90 pages) and chapbook manuscript submissions (28-47 pages) until July 31, 2023. Split Lip Press: Accepting submissions for novellas and novels until September 1, 2023. Alice James Books: A prize of $5,000 and publication by Alice James Books is given annually for a poetry collection by a poet residing in the United States. Submit a manuscript of 48 to 100 by October 16. All submissions are considered for publication.
