Member Spotlight: Ellen Meeropol

author Ellen Meeropol and her book Sometimes an Island

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing fiction helps me understand the world in all its brutality and kindness, the fierceness of our species and – I hope – our potential to do a better job of protecting the earth and those who live on it. These are tumultuous times and we need stories to keep us human.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I don’t experience writer’s block. There are times when words flow, and times when they are halting and I have to wait for them.

What is your favorite time to write? I write in my head all the time. I put those words down on paper or screen whenever I can grab a quiet hour or two.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? People write for the company; characters are critical.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? I think it’s an exciting time to be a writer if you don’t mind not making any money and doing much of the promotion yourself. The world of indie publishing is robust and the literary communities are supportive and delightful.

Ellen Meeropol’s Sometimes An Island is out now with Sea Crow Press.
