Member Spotlight: Nancy D Collander

author Nancy Collander and her book Through Their Eyes

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing is self-expression, allowing me to open up to others and make connections and bonds with my readers. People I’ve never met can connect with, and find meaning in, the words I write, and relate to my messages on a personal level. The written word lasts and endures in a way other mediums cannot.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I’ve never encountered writer’s block. I always have something to write about.

What is your favorite time to write? I’m a morning person so I do most of my writing before mid-afternoon; I hardly ever write in the evening unless I have an important mental inspiration.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Hire a professional editor! It’s well worth the cost.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Self-publishing gives me the creative freedom to tell my stories my way and design my books to my own specifications.

Nancy Collander’s Through Their Eyes: Reflections on Joy, Loss, and Learning is out now with Small Farm Publishing.
