The Authors Guild has released a comprehensive set of recommended best practices to help authors navigate issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and their implications for the writing profession. As generative AI systems like ChatGPT become more common—with AI-generated books proliferating on online marketplaces, publishers incorporating AI into their operations, and authors experimenting with AI tools—there are questions about how these technologies should and should not be used in the writing process. The Authors Guild’s recommended best practices aim to guide and educate authors as they navigate the challenges of generative AI in writing and publishing.

The Guild’s recommendations cover AI issues authors may encounter in the writing and publishing process. Some of the specific topics covered include:

• What authors can do if their work has been used to train AI models
• How to ethically use AI tools to assist in the writing process
• When and how to disclose AI use to publishers and readers
