Deal Memo 101: What Authors Should Know and Negotiate Before Accepting a Deal

resource video

Members of the Authors Guild are invited to a discussion with agents from the Association of American Literary Agents (AALA) on the key aspects that authors should understand about negotiating book deals. What should authors know about the process, and how can agents help with negotiating a better deal?

The panel will discuss the importance of the deal memo, which is a document that publishers provide listing the major components of a deal before an official contract gets sent. We’ll also discuss the role of boilerplate contracts and specific clauses including territories, subrights, royalties, payout structures, and terms that address competing books and next books.
