As a case study of the path to publication, From Manuscript to Marketplace offers candid talks between an author and members of their publishing team about each step of the publication process: acquisition, editorial, marketing, and more. In this event, author Allison Gilbert tells us about Listen, World!, her recent biography of Elsie Robinson co-written with Julia Scheeres. Joining her in the discussion are agent Richard Morris and editor Emma Berry.
A Q&A will follow the presentation; you can pre-submit a question when registering for the event. A recording will be made available for those who cannot attend live.
The event will take place via Zoom with automatic closed captioning. To request any other accessibility features, please email support@authorsguild.org and we will make every effort to accommodate.
Emma Berry is Senior Editor at Basic Books and Seal Press, acquiring a broad range of research-based nonfiction that moves the conversation on feminism and social justice forward. Before joining Basic and Seal in 2020, she was an editor at Crown, where she acquired and edited books by Katherine Sharp Landdeck, Holly Jackson, Dorothy Brown, and Maurice Chammah.
Allison Gilbert is an award-winning journalist and co-author of Listen, World!, the first biography of American writer Elsie Robinson, a newspaper columnist who came from nothing and became the most-read woman in the country and highest-paid woman writer in the William Randolph Hearst media empire. The New York Times raves “One does not tire of spending time with Elsie Robinson” and the Wall Street Journal proclaims the book “an important contribution to women’s history.” Susan Orlean effuses the biography is “the rarest of things — a lively piece of unknown history, a marvelous story of a woman’s triumph, and a tremendous read.”
Allison is author of Always Too Soon: Voices of Support for Those Who Have Lost Both Parents, Parentless Parents: How the Loss of Our Mothers and Fathers Impacts the Way We Raise Our Children, and Passed and Present: Keeping Memories of Loved Ones Alive. She is co-editor of Covering Catastrophe: Broadcast Journalists Report September 11.
Gilbert lives in New York with her husband and two children. You can connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Richard Morris has been with Janklow & Nesbit Associates since 1998 representing narrative nonfiction and literary fiction. He is particularly interested in books that challenge our common assumptions, be it in the fields of cultural history, business, food, sports, science or faith. His clients include, among others, Allison Gilbert, Gary Weiss, Mark Schatzker, Andrea Hiott, Robert Lifton, Jonathan Waldman, Alan Patricof, and the Gore Vidal Estate.
With support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Penguin Random House, and our donors, the Authors Guild Foundation is pleased to make Business Bootcamps for Writers free and open to the public.
Several writers organizations have partnered with the Authors Guild Foundation to help shape these programs. Our deepest appreciation to these organizations.
