Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Reading historical fiction invites us into another era, introduces readers to little known histories, and sparks interest in learning more about a time, place or event. As a writer of historical fiction, my goal is to create characters that modern-day readers can relate to across the ages.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Swimming! When I swim laps, my mind clears and I think through various aspects of the story I’m working on: character development, structure, etc.

What is your favorite time to write? Morning.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Develop a thick skin for critique. Your critique group wants you to write a better story and they’ll give feedback to drive you in that direction.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Connecting with readers and hearing their take on my story. That’s much easier to do today social media, email, and other online avenues.

Lisa Ard’s Brighter Than Her Fears is out now with Creative James Media.
