Mickey Dubrow and an image of his book Bulletproof

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? I love a good story and wanted to tell my own stories. Writing stories has taught me to see the world in a new way. Books open people’s eyes to new ideas and perspectives.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Lower your expectations. Once I stop trying to write the perfect book, I relax and write.

What is your favorite time to write? I don’t have a favorite time. I can pretty much write whenever or wherever.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Back when I was writing for television, a senior writer look over a script I had written and she corrected my grammar. I objected, saying it was just a script. She said, “If you’re going to be a writer, learn to write.” In other words, respect the medium you’ve chosen to do. Don’t leave it to someone else to correct your mistakes. It’s more professional and gives you more control over your work.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? In a way the book bans have been a boon to books and writers because of the way people fought against them. The bans reminded us of how important books are to an open society. Being a writer today is very exciting.
