Member Spotlight: D.K. McCutchen

author D.K. McCutchen and her book Electric Ice

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? We use stories to imagine the future, stories to explain the world, stories to explain ourselves, stories to pass down knowledge, stories to imagine alternatives, stories to test against reality, stories to explain science. If we can’t imagine it, we can’t know it, influence it, create it, change it.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I like Quick Writes or Free Writing. If you decide to dedicate a short amount of time to just writing, with no more pressure than to move your pen or typing fingers, inevitably you’ll get bored enough that something more interesting comes out!

What is your favorite time to write? ALL the time! Morning I’m more positive. Evenings I can be pretty negative. So it depends on what I’m writing? Honestly? I don’t get enough time to write with full time teaching and all. Sometimes I write when I should be grading!

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Keep your cast of characters small in the beginning. Won’t work for everyone, but it did for me.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? For some reason speculative fiction has taken off. Maybe because we’re all facing the end of our world? Anyway, it’s fun to have options for publishing and sharing all these stories in my head.
