author D.K. Coutant and her book Elegance and Evil

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? There is some wonderful research that demonstrates reading novels can help people develop empathy. I love the idea that writing a story can help someone walk in another person’s shoes. Personally, writing helps me look at the world more closely, stop and really study my surroundings, or the subtle motives that guide those around me. It helps me understand the world. I also just feel good after I’ve written a scene or page. Similar to the endorphin high after I’ve exercised. I hope I will always include writing in my life.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I sit down and force myself to notice something or someone. For example, a bird landing on a tree branch. I describe it and think about what purpose it could play in building a scene. Or if I see a stranger in a cafe or a park, I make up a backstory of who that character could be. Where do they come from, why are they there? Maybe it relates to my WIP or maybe not, I write it down anyway. Once I start stretching my mind that way, I can usually engage with my WIP more easily.

What is your favorite time to write? Afternoon is when I usually find the time. It helps me unwind from the hassles of earlier in the day. And if possible I get outside to do it. The writing comes easier for me sitting, or at least looking outside.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Don’t focus on the quality of your writing in the first draft. It is you telling yourself the story. It is driving through a dark, foggy night. You can only see what is illuminated by your headlights. But slow and steady progress will get you where you need to be. … Then, start your editing engines:)

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? As much as I like holding a physical book made of paper in my hands. The prolific spread of ebooks has made it possible for my books to not only be read here in the USA, but anywhere. I received a lovely email from a reader in Switzerland today telling me how much she enjoyed reading my mystery. I love the idea that readers around the world can find, and easily download, my books wherever they are.
