Member Spotlight: Steven Schindler

author Steven Schindler and his book Cover for Me

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Every sentient being has stories. Those who can write them down are lucky to be able to do so. “Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads of popular opinions”- Jack Kerouac

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? As the saying goes, “The first rule of writing is to put the seat of your pants to the seat of your chair.” And I would add, put on some good bop.

What is your favorite time to write? Early morning after the coffee kicks in.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? As a young TV news producer, I interviewed Kurt Vonnegut about the anti-nuke rally he was participating in. At the end of the interview, I asked him, “What advice do you have for a young aspiring writer?” He replied, “Never take a writing class.”

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? In this age of tweets, Tik Tok, and anonymous rants, it’s an honor to have someone tell Alexa, “Add to Cart” one of my books, and spend X hours reading it.

Steven Schindler’s Cover for Me is out today with The Elevated Press.
