Member Spotlight: Kate Moseman

author Kate Moseman and her book A Nest of Magic

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing is important to the world because it’s a way to share the human experience, to dive deep into the mind of another person and see the world in a new way. Writing is important to me because I enjoy sharing unique pieces of my own experience with others, like a treasured collection of gems.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? My tried and tested remedies for writer’s block include: visiting a museum, going to see a play, going to see a movie, attending a writers’ group, or, when all else fails, going to Disney World.

What is your favorite time to write? I prefer late afternoon to evening, when I can indulge in a rare second cup of coffee and fly on the wings of caffeine.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? The best piece of writing advice I’ve ever received is specificity. Be specific. Specific, unique observations make characters, settings, and emotions real.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? I love seeing points of view that haven’t been represented as much before finally receiving more attention, like LGBTQ+ stories.
