I write to tell stories, fiction and nonfiction, that I hope will make a difference in people’s lives, whether to inform, engage or enlighten. Writing has changed the course of human history and will continue to do so in both personal and profound ways. What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I start with an understanding that there are several stages in the writing process, and I try not to edit myself during brainstorming or initial creative steps. I also strive to end a writing session at a “good place” so I am motivated to return to that part of the story in-progress. Once I have words on the page (or screen), I begin each new round of writing by reviewing and often revising that previously written material. What is your favorite time to write? Fortunately, I am able to write at all hours of the day. Though at 73, I have to pace myself more than in my younger days. What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? One of my favorite mentors, Lee K. Abbott, counseled me on handling rejection and disappointment, reminding that the power to persevere is in my hands: “No one is going to show up at your door and tell you to stop writing. Thrive!” What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Though technology and the array of media available to writers today may be a cautionary tale, I am grateful for the many opportunities to reach a wide, diverse audience with my stories.
