Member Spotlight: Naomi Shibles

author Naomi Shibles and her book Wing Haven

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing and reading go together like water and sunlight—mixed together, they create something special that makes the world a better place.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I face writer’s block by revisiting my last few scenes where I left off and then sketch out a map of wherever that last scene takes place. I mark where all my characters physically are and where they need to go.

What is your favorite time to write? I like to write during the early morning when it’s quiet and everyone else is asleep.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? I encourage anyone to write freely and then “kill your darlings.”

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? The possibilities writers have today are exciting. Sure, it’s a crowded marketplace, but we all have the ability to create the best book we can, and then follow an avenue to publication.

Naomi Shibles’s Wing Haven is out June 24 with Birthday Ranch Press.
