The Authors Guild Banned Books Club Share on Twitter (opens in a new tab) on Facebook (opens in a new tab) on Linkedin (opens in a new tab) via email The Authors Guild Banned Books Club is a free virtual book club held on the social reading app Fable. Each month, the Banned Books Club presents a different work of fiction or nonfiction recently barred in one or more U.S. school districts or states. Participating readers can log on to Fable anytime during the month to access the moderated book discussion led by the author─or if the author is deceased, a well-known writer who has a special affinity with the work─as well as valuable resources to help them get the most out of their reading experience. The Authors Guild Banned Books Club is made possible by a generous grant from Hachette. Now Reading: Out of Darkness by Ashley Hope Pérez One of the most banned books in the country, Ashley Hope Pérez’s Out of Darkness tells a love story between a Mexican American girl and an African American boy, set against the backdrop of a segregated oil town where a real-life gas explosion killed hundreds. While the book contains themes of race and class, it has been banned in nearly two dozen school districts for its depictions of sexual intimacy and assault.
