Each month we curate a list of contests, fellowships, and other writing opportunities with approaching deadlines. Opportunities will be posted in the month prior to their deadlines, so that you have ample time to submit your work or applications.

Fiction Contests

C. Michael Curtis Short Story Book Prize
Eligibility: Emerging writers (w/no published books of fiction) in thirteen Southern states.
Prize: $10,000 + book publication
Entry fee: $25

Nonfiction Contests

Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant
Eligibility: Creative nonfiction writers under contract with a publisher & at least two years into their contract
Prize: $40,000

Poetry Contests

Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize
Eligibility: Poets who have not had a full-length book of poetry published previously
Prize: $5,000 + publication

Translation Contests

Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize
Eligibility: Translators with book-length translations of Asian* poetry or source texts from Zen Buddhism in in 2018 (*translations from Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean into English)
Prize: $5,000

Italian Prose in Translation Award (IPTA)
Eligibility: Translators with books of fiction or literary non-fiction translated from Italian into English in 2018
Prize: $5,000

ALTA Travel Fellowship
Eligibility: Emerging translators

Peter K. Jansen Memorial Travel Fellowship
Eligibility: Emerging translators of color or translators working from an underrepresented diaspora or stateless language

Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation
Eligibility: Translators with works published between 1 April 2018 and 31 March 2019

New South Writing Contest
Eligibility: Writers who have not published a book of prose or poetry

Eligibility: All writers (prose or poetry chapbooks are eligible)

Prize: $5,000 + residency in Carson McCullers’s childhood home

Eligibility: All writers
Prize: week-long writers’ retreat in Thailand
Other fees: $975 for retreat; $330-$435 for lodging
