Publicity is never guaranteed, but hiring a freelance publicist can be a game-changer for drawing attention to your book. If you have the means to pay for the campaign out of pocket, you might want to reach out to publicists who specialize in children’s literature to learn more about how they can augment your and your publisher’s efforts.
This webinar will provide an overview of how freelance publicity works and what sort of timeline to expect. Veteran publicist Elena Stokes, founder of Wunderkind PR, will converse with moderator Lupita Aquino. We will hear examples and case studies of successful kid lit campaigns that demonstrate the work of professional publicists.
A Q&A will follow the presentation; you can pre-submit a question when registering for the event. A recording will be made available for Authors Guild members.
The event will take place via Zoom with automatic closed captioning. To request any other accessibility features, please email support@authorsguild.org and we will make every effort to accommodate.
Elena Stokes launched Wunderkind PR in September 2008 with the philosophy that serious experience and personal attention are the key to great publicity results. Wunderkind PR works closely with publishers, authors, PR agencies, and communications companies to carefully tailor book publicity plans to produce the best possible results. Elena arrived at Tor and Forge Books, Macmillan, after working for The Fulbright Commission in London and writing advertising copy for New York area radio. Elena worked at Macmillan for over a decade and during her last five years at Macmillan, she served as Director of Publicity for the Tor, Forge, Starscape, Tor Teen, Paranormal Romance and Seven Seas Manga imprints. She has worked extensively with many different genres including science fiction, fantasy, mystery, thrillers, horror, women’s fiction, westerns, and non-fiction titles.

She has moderated numerous book events and is the founder of La Comunidad Reads, an author-inclusive book club in partnership with the DC Public Library, that focuses on amplifying Latine Literature. Alongside her vibrant online presence, she has contributed insightful book coverage to outlets such as TODAY.com, Aster(ix) Literary Journal, She Reads, The Washington Independent Review of Books, and many more. Notably, Lupita has served as a judge for the 2023 Louise Meriwether First Prize for the Feminist Press and was on the Selection Committee for the Aspen Words Literary Prize in 2021. When not immersed in books, she enjoys exploring local bookstores and libraries with her wife and son.
