After years working in marketing and publicity at major children’s publishing houses, Sally M. Kim pivoted to become a literary agent. In this Agent Talks event, Kim will demystify the strategies used by traditional publishers and give tips on how you can best partner with your publishing team to launch and promote your next book. We will also chat about how writers and illustrators can break into kid lit and discuss the current market.
Moderated by Samantha Fabien, literary agent at Root Literary.
Special thanks to Literary Agents of Change for collaborating with the Authors Guild Foundation on this series.
Based in San Francisco, California, Sally M. Kim is an associate agent with Andrea Brown Literary Agency. She represents a wide range of children’s book authors, illustrators, and author-illustrators of picture books through middle grade. Sally is drawn to stories with a distinct voice, unexpected wit, aggressive pacing, punchy and/or emotionally resonant endings. When it comes to illustration, she gravitates to traditional mediums and is always on the lookout for versatile artists with a unique take on color, texture, perspective, and thoughtful details. Sally is especially eager to see authentic explorations of underrepresented cultures, relationships, and identities.
Literary Agents of Change, the nonprofit born out of American Association of Literary Agents’ (AALA) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, was formed to help dismantle the barriers to entry into a career as a literary agent for members of historically underrepresented groups, particularly people of color while recognizing the systems of overlapping oppressions in regard to race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, class, and ability. Literary Agents of Change offers a Fellowship Program to encourage recruitment into the profession, and a Mentorship Program focused on the retention and promotion of agents from these communities.
