Writing, for me, is a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. It provides a platform for my truth, fostering a deep relationship with the Self. When I write with honesty, I not only increase my self-awareness but also gain a clear understanding of my essence. It’s a process that brings clarity to my thoughts and helps me distinguish between who I am and who I aspire to be. Writers infuse heart and soul into life. They inspire and show people they are not alone in their feelings. Writing creates a pathway to our inner selves, enabling us to discover truths we didn’t know we held. Writers serve as a conscience for the world, distinguishing right from wrong, good from bad. Writing uncovers problems and offers solutions. Writing energizes. What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? When I’m faced with writer’s block, I don’t panic. Instead, I take a step back and give myself a couple of days off from writing. I might delve into the subject that’s blocking me, hoping to gain a new perspective. To get back into the flow, I start by writing about anything that comes to mind. This usually helps me regain my momentum and tackle the topic that had me blocked. What is your favorite time to write? For most of my life, I have written in the early morning. However, recently, I have found writing in the later part of the afternoon works for me. What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? The best writing advice I’ve received came from Natalie Goldberg. She advises not to worry about spelling, punctuation, or grammar on the first draft. Just write. She encourages diving into the frightening, embarrassing, raw issues that present themselves. In short, find your genuine voice and express it. What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? What excites me is the chance to explore who I am, especially during this moment of abrupt change. Does my behavior reflect my values and aspirations? Writing honestly lays bare the truth. John Pratt Bingham’s Buddies Share Their Spiritual Journeys is out now with Resource Publications.
