Member Spotlight: Kathy Anderson

author Kathy Anderson and her book Vamoose

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing is a delicious little secret world that I live in (before it’s published anyway). I can’t imagine living another kind of life. As with all the arts, it’s an important medium for the world because it reaches out and connects us beneath the skin.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? The beloved routine of morning pages, digging through old notebooks, running slow and low while counting strides.

What is your favorite time to write? Morning is the best for me, right after lots of coffee. But a deadline is a miraculous prompt to get cracking anytime!

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? No one ever gave me writing advice that stuck with me. What I needed most was to develop my own inner guidance, to recognize the beautiful YES of the right word falling into place, and to cultivate the sheer persistence it takes to keep going until a story or a book finds its home.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Being a writer at this time is extra exciting because in a digital world, your words can travel very far and find readers across boundaries.

Kathy Anderson’s Vamoose is out now with Vine Leaves Press.
