author Marizelle Arce and her book Germs Are Not Our Enemy

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing gives my internal thoughts a voice. It allows me to shape and share what lives inside of me—my questions, my stories, my truths. For many, it becomes a lifeline to self-expression and a means of processing the world. Writing is also a universal bridge: it uplifts voices that may otherwise go unheard and invites creative expression across cultures, generations, and experiences. It’s more than just a personal tool—it’s a form of creation that fosters connection. Through writing, we build community, challenge norms, preserve knowledge, and inspire change. In a world full of noise, writing helps us listen more closely—to ourselves and to one another.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Taking a step from actual writing and living life-observing my family, nature and the world around me. Reconnecting to my inner thoughts and even talking out loud into a recording device helps. What is your favorite time to write?

When it’s really quiet and calm. Mostly at night. When the breath and heartbeat has slowed and the lights are dimmer, I think and write the best.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Don’t judge your writing. Let it come out. Don’t criticize it, correct or nit-pick it. Just write. Worry about editing it when you’re all done.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? The ability to share my work with the whole world in various forms, languages and situations. The level of technology is amazing to me.
