Member Spotlight: Matthew James Sullivan

author Matthew Sullivan and his book Midnight in Soap Lake

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Creativity is a gift all people have, and in sharing the fruits of it, we are better able to understand & appreciate each other.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Routine. Write every day, even if it means for two minutes on the back of a Taco Bell bag. (In fact, that’s just the kind of activity that often unlocks the block.)

What is your favorite time to write? Morning when I’m drowsy and am not sure I’m even awake…

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Keep yourself challenged and entertained in initial drafts, and think about readers as you revise.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Reading writers who are breaking formula, subverting genre, refusing to stay in their lane…

Matthew Sullivan’s Midnight in Soap Lake: A Small-Town Murder Mystery of Urban Legends and Mysterious Magic is out now with Hanover Square Press.
