Miller June 27, 2025 Share on Twitter (opens in a new tab) on Facebook (opens in a new tab) on Linkedin (opens in a new tab) via email Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing is a form of escape. Writing is cathartic. But writing is also about expression. It offers me the vehicle to release all my childhood fantasies. It gives me the chance to express emotions I might not be comfortable expressing aloud. I don’t write to fit a genre. Genres bend to me. 🙂 What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Go to sleep. It’s terribly inconvenient, but the second my head hits the pillow, the mental floodgates open up. What is your favorite time to write? Early. I can conquer anything between 6:00 and 10:00 am. After that, the word count dwindles. What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? Don’t put pressure on yourself. When writing turns into pressure, you’ve lost the magic. What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Self-publishing. Having worked with traditional publishers–with some of them it was like typing with handcuffs on. They have strict tropes. I want to invent new tropes. Maureen A. Miller’s Between is out now.
