Member Spotlight: Randy Mosher

author Randy Mosher and his book Your Tasting Brain

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing allows you really get inside of people’s heads and make them think and sometimes even change their lives.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? I write non-fiction, so it’s fairly straightforward to create an outline, then flesh it out in whatever order you please. Start anywhere, then move if you get stuck or bored. I do always write the introduction last, so you don’t know exactly what you’re going to say until you’ve said it, and see everything in context.

What is your favorite time to write? All day, every day.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? No single statement, but I learned to write at an advertising. The keys there are know your readers psychology, keep it as brief as possible and write in an approachable but persuasive voice.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? That there are still things that people want to know that I can present to them.

Randy Mosher’s Your Tasting Brain: A Sensory Approach to Wine, Beer, and Other Pleasures is out June 1 with ‎University of Chicago Press.
