In a much-discussed and (depending on who you’re asking) surprising turn of events, the Swedish Academy announced today that singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has received the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature. The Academy gave Dylan the honor “for having created new poetic expressions within the American song tradition.” This is the first time the laurels have gone to a musician, and it’s the first time the Nobel for Literature, with its purse of 8 million Swedish kroner, has been awarded to an American since Toni Morrison was honored in 1993.
