What happens when your publisher goes bankrupt? Is there anything you can do to protect yourself? Join us for a discussion and Q&A with Authors Guild legal staff and bankruptcy attorney Marc Hirschfield of Royer Cooper Cohen Braunfield LLC, who is assisting the Authors Guild with the bankruptcy proceedings of children’s book publisher Albert Whitman & Co.
We’ll hear about what the bankruptcy process entails and the impact on authors and their works when their publisher goes bankrupt. Following an overview, we will take audience Q&A about the Whitman bankruptcy and publisher bankruptcies in general.
Marc E. Hirschfield, recognized by Best Lawyers for Bankruptcy Litigation for the fifth consecutive year and by New York SuperLawyers since 2011, focuses his practice on bankruptcy, business restructuring, creditors’ rights, litigation, and debt finance. With 30 years of experience as an attorney, Marc regularly represents parties in bankruptcy proceedings and related litigation throughout the country. Marc is also a court-certified mediator and is appointed to mediation panels formed by the United States Bankruptcy Courts for the District of Delaware and for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and a member of the Turnaround Management Association. Marc serves on the Board of Directors of the Turnaround Management Association’s New York Chapter.
Umair Kazi is the Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Authors Guild. He studied law at the University of Iowa, and creative writing at Columbia University. Previously a board member of the American Literary Translators Association, Umair now serves as an at-large advisor to the board.
Kyle Maxey is a Staff Attorney at the Authors Guild. He studied law at George Mason University, and political science, history, and business administration at Mount St. Mary’s University.
