School Visits: Booking, Planning, and Navigating a Timely Revenue Stream

School visits offer a much-needed source of income for children’s authors, and this discussion will explore the best practices for planning, booking, and pulling them off successfully whether in person or online. A panel of renowned authors and illustrators will discuss how they connect with schools, teachers, libraries, and media specialists as well as the going rates for author visits and the details of negotiating terms and book sales. We will also learn about the “dos and don’ts” of creating an engaging presentation that is designed for your audience. Featuring Paulette Bogan, Floyd Cooper, Debbie Ohi, and Carmen Oliver.  Moderated by Pat Cummings.

The Panelists:

Paulette Bogan

Paulette Bogan is the author and/or illustrator of over a dozen books for young readers, including Bossy FlossyVirgil & Owen, and Virgil & Owen Stick Together. Her book Lulu the Big Little Chick was awarded the CBC Children’s Choice Book Award. Virgil & Owen was chosen as one of Bank Street College’s Best Children’s Books of the Year, Under Five. 

Floyd Cooper

Floyd Cooper has had a prolific career in children’s publishing, authoring more than 100 children’s books and illustrating more than 2,000 book covers. He has received considerable recognition and praise for his work, including several NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Literary Work, Children’s nominations; the 2011 Independent Publisher Book Awards gold medal in children’s picture books; the 2018 Phoenix Award Honor; and three Coretta Scott King Honors and multiple American Library Association Notable Children’s Books awards. He was also the 2009 Coretta Scott King Book Awards Illustrator winner. The Kwanzaa Forever Stamp Design (2018) is his first project for the United States Postal Service. 

Pat Cummings

Pat Cummings – Author and/or illustrator of over 40 books, Pat teaches children’s book courses at Pratt Institute and Parsons and runs a summer Children’s Book Boot Camp that brings writers and illustrators together with top editors, art directors and agents. She serves on the boards of the Authors Guild, the Authors League Fund, and SCBWI, and also as Chair of the Founders Award Jury for the Society of Illustrators’ Original Art Show. Pat’s latest books include her debut middle grade novel, Trace, from HarperCollins and Where is Mommy?, a picture book from Holiday House. Debbie Ridpath Ohi

Debbie Ridpath Ohi is a children’s book author and illustrator whose art appears in books by Judy Blume and Michael Ian Black, among others. She has given virtual events for schools, libraries and educators during the pandemic as well as doing a virtual book tour for her publisher, and looks forward to sharing what she has learned. Carmen Oliver

Carmen Oliver is the author of the picture book series Bears Make the Best Buddies (Reading, Math, Writing, and Science), A Voice for the Spirit Bears: How One Boy Inspired Millions to Save a Rare Animal, a Junior Library Guild 2019 pick, and the forthcoming picture books The Twilight Library (NorthSouth Books, Fall 2022) and The Favio Chavez Story (Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, Spring 2022). In 2014, she founded The Booking Biz, a boutique-style agency that brings award-winning children’s authors and illustrators to schools, libraries, and special events.
