While many people would prefer not to think about estate planning, you should look forward to mapping out your legacy as an author. Copyrighted works can benefit your heirs long after your death. The right planning will enable them to manage your literary estate more easily, increasing the potential of sustained revenue and a longer shelf life for your body of work.
Attorney Edward M. McCoyd and author Michael La Ronn will discuss wills, trusts, appointing a literary executor, and what your beneficiaries should know ahead of time. We will cover what traditionally and self-published authors should know, as well as the practical matters of ensuring your heirs can access your bank accounts, social media handles, and active publishing arrangements in your place. The panel will be moderated by author Erin Lowry, host of our Money Matters series.
Michael La Ronn has published over 80 science fiction & fantasy books and self-help books for writers. He built a writing career while raising a family, working a full-time job, and even attending law school classes in the evenings. His books The Author Estate Handbook and The Author Heir Handbook are helping authors and their heirs navigate estate planning in the new digital world of publishing. Ed McCoyd practices law in Garden City, New York. He previously worked in the legal departments at McGraw-Hill Education and the Association of American Publishers, and as Director of Legal Services at the Authors Guild.
Erin Lowry, moderator, is the author of the four-part Broke Millennial series, including: Broke Millennial, Broke Millennial Takes On Investing and Broke Millennial Talks Money and her soon-to-be-published Broke Millennial Workbook: Take Control and Get Your Financial Life Together.
